Anto-Carte. De terre et de ciel
From 19/03 to 21/08/2022
The BAM, Rue Neuve, 8 - 7000 Mons
From Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm
The Anto-Carte exhibition. De terre et de ciel introduces you to a paintbrush virtuoso whose work weaves a fascinating link between the centuries. The entire heritage of the old masters’ painting know-how is expressed in the paintings from the first half of the twentieth century by this Mons artist whose career was largely international.
80 works from public and private collections allow you to see the paintings of Anto-carte through the prism of aspiration to the sacred. Indeed, the artist’s greatest paintings revisit the classical themes of Christian iconography while celebrating the grandeur of the peasant world.
After having devoted two great retrospectives to him in 1945 and, most recently, in 1995, the BAM offers this focus through a path that wishes to be more meditative. It’s an invitation to let go and fully immerse yourself in this spiritual universe.
The exhibition continues with a journey through the same themes, this time illustrated by a selection of major works or rediscoveries from the municipal collections. A dialogue between the works is thus created for a dual interpretation on the same theme.
Antoine Carte (1886-1954) is an artist from Mons who is cumulatively a painter, lithographer and illustrator. He made himself known throughout the world, particularly by exhibiting in the United States, Barcelona, Mexico and participating several times in the Venice Biennale.
In 1928, he founded the Nervia Group, a collective that values young Walloon artists, alongside his friends Louis Buisseret, Léon Eeckman and other members.
