  • The festival of St. john bonfires comes from ancient civilizations' sun-worshipping ceremonies (those of the Persian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Germanic, Celtic and Nordic). It honours the spring and autumn equinoxes as well as the summer and winter solstices. In these ceremonies, the sun was worshipped as a god and a symbolic fire was lit during the revelries. The progamme is simple: processions with drums parade through the town to announce that a bonfire will be held on Place Nervienne. The festival has evolved considerably and concerts are held throughout the evening. There are now over 15 000 people who attend the bonfire lighting!
