- Every year in early autumn, a Liverpool wind blows on Mons (Hainaut - Belgium) during the annual edition of the Beatles Day. During that day, musicians passionate about the music of the Fab Four present their versions of Beatles‘ hits. Back to the origins of this event... In late August 1987, following an article in the Belgian national press, three Mons Beatles fans visit Liverpool, almost as a 'pilgrimage', the hometown of the legendary Quartet to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album on site during the annual Beatles Week. Guy NOIRFALISE, Alain CARDON, and Bernard DUTRIEUX discover a changing harbour city where they go on a journey - a Magical Mystery Tour - that leads them from the Cavern Club to Penny Lane via the birth homes of John, Paul, George and Ringo, Strawberry Fields, Mathew Street, the statue of Eleanor Rigby, the Philharmonic, The Grapes, The Empress pubs... And, at the Britannia Adelphi Hotel *****, where the annual Beatles Convention where cult items are sold, meeting privileged witnesses of their legend, shows by tribute bands,... they talk with Julia Baird, John Lennon’s half-sister. A great moment for our three pilgrims. During the trip back to Mons, excited by this international event, heads full of images and sounds, an idea sprouts in the mind of the three fans. They dream of presenting a similar demonstration of sympathy for John, Paul, George & Ringo at national Belgian level. With some contacts already made in Liverpool, personal ideas and a dynamic committee, they put the project under construction. In September 1988, the first Beatles Convention is held in Mons in the halls of Waux Hall. It is the first gathering of its kind in Belgium, set up by Beatles fanatics and it immediately is a roaring success. Below our first poster, a photo of Bob Wooder, the disc jockey at the Cavern in Liverpool, Alan William, first producer of the Beatles and Abbey Road the Belgian tribute band.
