In the footsteps of Victor Hugo in Mons - Artothèque

Exhibition at Mons
  • 15 October 1864. Arrived in Mons at 5 h ½

"The evening, after dinner, saw Mons again (after twenty-seven years). Moonlight. The Spanish belfry, the Town Hall, the carillons. Sainte-Waudru. The grand place, same magical effect and even the same moonlight as in 1837 ".

At the heart of 2 exhibitions, you will find sketches of the city, objects from the municipal collections, etchings, photos of the time and art installations which will bring you back in time to discover the genius of the author of "Les Misérables" and the Mons literary world of the time.

During the circuit in the footsteps of Victor Hugo, rediscover, with family or friends, the city of Mons in the 19th century, from the collegiate church in the artotheque via the belfry or the Grand-Place. The circuit proposes you to rediscover the streets and the atmosphere of the city as the famous artist perceived them during these two stays in Mons and in his correspondence with his wife Adele. Fiery, ambitious and emotional, it offers a historic, unique and lyrical look of the city that will be revealed through unpublished documents.

An initiative of the city of Mons in co-operation Maison Victor Hugo (Paris).
